Salva is a young boy from Southern Sudan. He is from the Dinka tribe. Chapter 1 of the book, A Long Walk to Water, explains the physical and social setting Salva finds himself in. North Sudan, who is the ruling government, is primarily Muslim while South Sudan is primarily Christian. The South Sudanese rebels are at war with the North Sudanese government because the south does not want to become Muslim. Salva is an innocent young boy caught up in the war. He is at school one day when his teacher hears gunshots and tells the class to flee. Salva flees away from his village along with his classmates and his family.
