The opposition may have thought that just a small potential country of 13 colonies and a relatively small population without all the resources and the military might of the British Empire would not stand a chance of defeating such an apparently strong power. Such a case if it were presented would not take into account the law of history that where there is oppression there is resistance and that fighting for a just cause can overcome most obstacles partly because the unity of those fighting is much greater than those fighting for the oppressors.
