Petroleum, coal, and natural gas are the fossil fuels. These fuels were formed from the energy of the sun. Sunlight was changed into living plant tissue through the process of photosynthesis. That plant tissue was then consumed by animals, which were, in turn, consumed by other animals. Eventually, when the animals died, their remains became part of the energy stored in fossil fuels.
