These men do not want people to think they are wimpy, so therefore they do not make a big deal about their death. The role that the light and darkness play in the poem is that when you are reading a poem and the paper is too dark then you simply cannot read it. If the paper is too light then it may blind you. So then you have to find the right contrast between light and dark to allow you to read the poem. You are very welcome.
