Why did hammurabi have his laws engraved in stone and placed in a public place

    This way everyone would have access to the laws, and everyone would be reminded of them often, so that they know to abide by them.

    Also, in the case of dispute, people could go to those places and read the law together: this prevented misunderstandings.
