Why do written English vowels differ from other Latin-based orthographies?

    Because of the event known as The Great Vowel Shift, which occurred in England between 1350 and 1600, when the English vowels started sounding more like its Germanic and Scandinavian predecessors, instead of keeping the Latin orthographies.
