In Joseph Conrad's novel, Heart of Darkness, a year after his return to Belgium, Marlow gives the packet of papers to the person for whom they were intended, Kurtz's fiancée, who mourns his loss, saying he was such a remarkable man, such a good man. "Men looked up to him-his goodness shone in his every act." When she asks Marlow about Kurtz's last moments, he lies: "The last word he pronounced was-your name."
