Helena runs after Demetrius while he goes after Hermia. Oberon sees this and feels pity for Helena. He commands Puck to use a love potion on Demetrius so that he will reciprocate Helena's feelings. However, Oberon's directions are vague and Puck uses the potion on Lysander. This causes the confusion.
