The rhyme scheme is one difference between the English sonnet and the Italian sonnet. In an Italian sonnet, the rhyme scheme is composed of eight lines of "abbaabba" and six lines of "abcabc" or "ababab". In an English sonnet the scheme is is three lines of four "abab" and one couplet at the end of "aa". They are similar in that they all have fourteen lines, same meter, and can draw from similar themes and subject matter.
