    When Mrs. Farquar saw Teddy, she was reminded of the natives who became blind because of the venom of the snakes in their place. She was very terrified and afraid that her son would grow up sightless, She was crying and cradling her son into her arms, hoping that her cook (who was a native) would be able to find a cure for her son.
