The irony of the story is that Hauchercone never even picked up the wallet, just a piece of string. But his enemy spread the news, that he did steal the wallet. Hauchercone wishes that people would believe he is innocent, because he really is but the people turn against him which makes Hauchercone eventually a raging maniac. He keeps retelling the story of the piece of string.
