    Well, first we learn that Beowulf has a sense of duty to himself and we learned that he has performed great deeds. His deeds are his testament, his demonstration of worthiness.

    His speech contributes to his characterization by making him seem more heroic and that he as fought many battles coming out victorious. Its also shows how bold he is in the matter of fact that he will fight Grendel with his bare hands.
