    Nick comes from a wealthy family ... his grandfather paid a man to serve for him in the civil war so that he would make money while all the working men were away.

    He is blinded, to some degree, of the atrocities of the American Dream and the "foul dust" that floats in the wake of Gatsby's dreams.
