What was a criticism of the USA Patriot Act when it was first enacted?

It did not do enough to protect citizens through the use of government intelligence gathering.

It went too far in allowing the government to gather intelligence on private conversations of US citizens.

It created too many agencies under one umbrella, which would exacerbate rather than ameliorate the issues identified.

It eliminated the independent authority of the Federal Bureau of Investigation by bringing it under the act's authority.

The correct answer is " It went too far in allowing the government to gather intelligence on private conversations of US citizens."

Many felt that the patriot act would bring more harm than do good as it would enable government agencies to spy on anyone whom they thought to be a possible threat, sometimes even without getting a warrant. Also warrant getting was made easier, so it was even easier to spy on someone.
