Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. What change did this lead to for owners of cotton plantations in the South?

    It lost them the use of Slaves, because they now had machines that picked the cotton off of the actual plants. They of course, still used slaves, but it lessened the number necessary for the task.
