The lack of faith is adressed in Lord Tennyson's writing when he reflects many of the doubts about God current in the Victorian age. Have in mind that this was writeen while evolutionary theory began to call into question the idea that God had created the earth and all its creatures. So Tennyson used to wonder : Did nature "red in tooth and claw," it means, violent and bloodthirsty, rule the day? The death of one of his friends provided a focus for Tennyson's larger queries about the nature of God.
