A hyperbole is the use of grossly overstated language to emphasize a characteristic of something or someone. The effect of the hyperbole is that it shows the reader how the character feels about what they're talking about by giving an extreme exaggeration. In the case of Swift's, "A Modest Proposal", the exaggeration involves the raising of infants until they are one year of age, only to be sold as food to the wealthy. Of course, no one would consider seeking to develop such a plan as this, but by carrying this thought to the far reaches of his audiences sensibilities, Swift is able to challenge them on what little they are doing to relieve the poor and starving of Ireland.
