Who is the central character introduced in the beginning of the myth?

It does depend on what myths and from what ethnicity you're reading, I'm going to assume it is Greek, but stories typically begin a) with a problem / situation at hand or b) introduce the main protagonist such a Odysseus, Zeus, or Achilles.
