    The answer is being in battle requires courage. In this part of the epic, Enkidu guides Gilgamesh to destroy Humbaba. Humbaba represents ultimate terror. So as Gilgamesh kills Gilgamesh, he is killing all possible fears. His bravery then equips him with courage.
