The first draft of the Declaration was supposed to be written by John Adams, but he convinced Thomas Jefferson to do it, and so it's Jefferson that wrote the first draft. This was then likely edited and commented on by the other members of the Committee of Five (committee specially for this occasion) : John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston and Roger Sherman.
