A fable is typically a fictional tale that conveys a clear message such as don't do drugs or don't talk to strangers. However an allegory is a story that whilst still has a message, it typically requires more interpretation as the message is usually more obscure. An example would be the novel Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan, which is an allegory for the Christian spiritual journey.
