What does "the proof of gold is fire; the proof of woman is gold; the proof of man is his woman." mean?

It's basically saying, you can tell if something is gold by how it reacts around heat (since gold melts at a certain temperature. In the same vein, you can see the nature of a woman by how she reacts around gold. Then you can see the nature of a man by his woman (wife).
