What is the definition of a hook?

When writing a newspaper or magazine article especially, a writer wants to grab the reader's attention quickly in order to get the readet interested enough to read the rest of the article. This is done by making a clever comparison, asking a rhetorical question, or mentioning a current events topic of high interest in the first sentence or two--this is the hook.
