At the end of "invasion from mars, professor pierson" writes that seeing sightseers enter the museum to view the martian machine is strange when he rembers the first time he " saw it, bright and clean, hard and silent, under the dawn of that last great day" why was the day the martians landed the "last great day"?

    Because it was the last day that the humans ruled the Earth. The martians took over Earth so thats why it was called the last day.
