I am not too sure, but I believe it contains sentence variety because some sentences are mostly compound-complex sentences when the summary says "A sacred tree stood at the centre. One of the gods pulled out some of its roots for his pregnant wife", is an example of a compound-complex sentence. Also, the sentence "This created a hole in the floor of the Sky-World. The man's wife fell through the hole toward the ocean below, clutching the roots in her hand." Is also, I believe, an example of a compound-complex sentence. But then, sentences one and two sound like they could be possibly simple sentences, or dependent clauses.
