The purpose of the Cross of Gold Speech, written by William Jennings Bryan, is to convey the message that if America relied completely on gold, the economy would suffer. He proposed using silver besides gold so as not to ruin the entire economy of the country. He was against monometallic gold standard which would ultimately cost the country a lot more than if it had continued using its policy of bimetallism.

Well ... the speech was meant to convince people that an economy based on the silver standard instead of one based on the gold standard would be a better economy for most people. He thought this because there is much more silver than gold and it is cheaper than gold.
