Even if they were not necessarily abolitionists, why might people in New Mexico vote against allowing slavery in their state?

    People in New Mexico might have voted against slavery not for altruistic and sympathetic reasons, but instead because slavery would have taken jobs away from citizens who otherwise would have gotten paid for their work.
