    Well, the clause i gonna start with a subordinating conjunction. They basically make it so that a sentence becomes dependent on another. The sentence in bold would have been complete had it not been for the subordinating clause:

    He hasn't shown up here becausehe called off the party.

    The entire clause acts as an adverb which explains why he hasn't shown up.
