Based on books One through Eight, what do you think would have happened had Odysseus and his men not plundered the land of Ismarus (land of the Cicones) ? 1They very likely may have been treated with xenia and never been forced to go to the land of the Cyclops. 2They likely would have been attacked, so it was a choice of "attack or be attacked."3 It didn't change the story at all; they likely would have traveled to the land of the Cyclops anyway. 4none of the above

I think the answer is 3 It didn't change the story at all; they likely would have traveled to the land of the Cyclops anyway.

The story goes as is because every aspect of the story has been manipulated by the gods and goddesses. They were destined to be in the land of Cyclops and one way or another they will arrive at their set destination.
