An Independent clause can stand on its own. Like for an example: Did Bobby award the trophy?

A subordinate clause cannot stand on its own because it is an incomplete sentence - it’s missing information. Like for an example: whoever ran the fastest.

Although you can add a subordinate clause to an independent clause. Like for an example: Bobby awarded the trophy to whoever ran the fastest.
