    Tom was reading a fictional book called "The Rise of the Colored Empires" by the equally fictional author Goddard. It was an immensely racist book tailored toward white supremacists. Fun fact: Fitzgerald based this book on a real piece, "The Rising Tide of Color: The Threat Against White World-Supremacy" by Lothrop Stoddard, published in 1920.
