A student is revising a story for the school newspaper that includes the following sentence: Student groups at Drew University were angered this week when university officials announced a ban on large soft drinks on campus. What phrase could be substituted for were angered to indicate that the students' reaction was more organized?

    To say students were angered sounds like it was a general reaction with little action in response to the policy. In order to display an organized effort by the students against the policy a better way to say it would be that students protested the ban on large soft drinks.
