The purpose of Poe's use of foreshadowing in this sentence from "The Black Cat" is to describe his character. The answer is letter C. He wanted to show to the reader the workings of the mind of character as being calm and kind hearted even though the narrator in his story knows he is about to die. Through foreshadowing and subsequent flashbacking, the readers are able to know the past of the narrator as being an alcoholic person and is superstitious. He had frequent omens regarding the black cat to which his wife believes that it is death in disguise. He may not believe it at first but later on, he started to see it as a true story. As the story progresses, it is revealed that he killed a cat and his wife making him delirious everytime.
