Fortunato means "fortunate one" in Italian and it could be seen that he is fortunate most of his life. he is describe as to have a weak spot by the narrator although he was a man to respect and maybe feared. However, his names becomes ironic because of how his life ended, he was walled up alive in an underground crypt so he asphyxiated.
