The type of space that can discourage interaction among group members and can even drive participants out of the situation altogether is known as sociofugal space.

As opposed to sociopetal space which encourages such interaction, sociofugal space can cause disruption between participants in a particular situation. Sociofugal or gridlike space means that it provides some privacy for participants, whereas sociopetal or radial space brings them together.
