In my opinion, the terms are "glimpse", "suffered alone" and "trapped".

The problem was acknowledged and discussed at the time, but the solution didn't seem to be there yet. Those women felt suffocated because the problem was still perceived as a very private issue (of private household lives) that the society didn't have the right, let alone the strength, to deal with.
