Henry David Thoreau was a 19th century philosopher and lived in the time of American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Thoreau influenced by the beliefs of Emerson’s transcendentalism. The latter is the idea of inherent goodness of people and nature. Like Thoreau, Annie Dillard was also influenced by the ideas of Emerson. Although she doesn’t belong to any religion, Annie sought spiritual truth and made references to many different religions. Thoreau withdrew from society and spent his time near the Walden Pond between 1845-47 and he made a novel about his life and activities during this time. Annie Dillard also spent her time in nature, near Tinker Creek and like Thoreau she made a novel titled "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" about her observations and activities.
