Jane Eyre is outraged, and feels that Helen should resist being treated unjustly. This is because author Charlotte Bronte was raised in a parsonage and has a well-developed sense of right and wrong. Helen is a pious Christian, and no doubt committed to "turning the other cheek," but her friend Jane Eyre does not see this response as adequate, or even meaningful. Jane would prefer to see justice triumph.
