It was the year of 1889, Susan had just gotten back from the trade center. She carried a loaf of bread and hay all the way to the farm, where she worked as a maid. She must've walked 5 miles their and back with no food or water. Penelope, the owner of the farm, unkindly greeted Susan as took the bread and hay. Penelope lived all alone in the farm with nothing but her maid and animals. At nightfall Penelope cheaply paid Susan for her work, as she walked 8 miles home. When Susan got home, she nearly got an hour of sleep before she had to get up and walk 8 miles back to Penelope's farm. Susan knew that Penelope was unkind and unfair, but she really did need the money. Even though, she still demanded better conditions and better pay. Penelope said she'd think about it, but Susan better get to work cleaning the dishes. She refused, so Penelope fired her. Susan traveled 8 miles back home. Eight days later, she received a letter from Penelope saying that she was willing to pay far better than before and even pay for a carriage for her to come to and home from work. Susan accepted this offer and worked for her. They got to know each other and came to find out what decent people each other were.
