Many people during the 1940s had a prejudice against African-Americans. This indicates that the jury during Tom's trial would have been biased. Many people during this time period associated African-Americans with violence and other acts of inhumanity. The 1940s was before the Civil Right movement and many people were racist. Therefore, Tom could not have won the trial against Mayella Ewell.
