Van Gogh was extremely bad at numerous activities. He failed in every career that he pursued. He was dismissed at his job as an art dealer. He tried teaching and later worked for a bookseller. He studied to be a minister in accordance with his father's wishes but found that he had no aptitude for math and foreign languages. Only then did he begin to study art.
