This can allow Edgar Allen Poe to do many things, one major thing was to explore human psychology. This narrator gives a calm eerie feeling about how he committed the murder of the old man, it's typical psychopath behavior (not feeling remorse for the victim/no emotion) and makes the ending even happier knowing that he is going to the police.
