Langston Hughes was perhaps the most criticized African American writer, this might be mainly because his works were mostly subjective, while most of the African American writers of his time wanted to put their best foot forward and write only of their better qualities. They accused him of making fun of their race, however, if one reads his works you can see his deep sympathy for his people's plight and his works were all from his own perspective, in his poem "I, Too" the simple line that says "I, too, am America." screams a lot of meaning, not only about black people's experiences of racial discrimination from white people but also from the division of class even in the black community. Where the black people coming from the upper class are ashamed of the common black people and wanted to hide their imperfections.
