When her mind starts to deteriorate (and she realizes that there is nobody she can talk to about her condition), the narrator starts to convince herself that there is a woman (first starting with just imagining eyes) trapped in the yellow wallpaper. She then starts to believe that she must free the woman from the wallpaper, which leads to her gradually ripping it off.

Afterward, she becomes extremely ill, she realizes that the woman in the wallpaper is her, and when she removes it from the wall, she is free.
