Is the word/term "a lot" one word or two words?

I mean like ...

I have alot of horses on my farm.

or is it

I have a lot of horses on my farm.

it looks fine either way, but what is the correct format of "a-lot"

    It’s a lot not alot or a-lot. I have a lot of horses on my farm.

    Im pretty sure both are acceptable, correct me if I am wrong.
