Why does the speaker in "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" say that he's seen rivers in ancient times, even though he couldn't possibly have been alive that long ago? The speaker is simply visualizing the rivers along with the reader. The speaker is saying that his soul feels old and weary. The speaker is explaining the connection he feels to his ancestors. The speaker is telling stories that have been handed down orally through his family.
