What does Thoreau mean when he says that the pond "is a mirror which no stone can crack"?

    I'm assuming that you can see your own reflection in an pond and unless the pond has evaporated you will continue to see your reflection. As to an mirror which can also project your reflection yet can also be easily cracked. It's an play on words, the reflection is you're soul, beauty and personality and it can't be cracked.
