D. The phrase "wretched creatures" reveals that Crusoe is preoccupied with mastery. In the story, Crusoe was a slave trader shipwrecked on an island and so at first looked down on the "savages" but with time began to re-consider his attitude to the inhabitants of the island and to slave trading.
