Firstly, since the United States is the only one that utilizes miles and feet in calculating speed, utilizing meters per second in calculating motion allows for information to be calculated by scientists in the rest of the world, as well as in the United States, thereby allowing scientists to draw from each other's research more easily. Furthermore, the unit of the meter comes from surveying the length light travels from within a vacuum, which is where the unit started being utilized. If we utilized feet per second, for instance, and another scientist from another country wanted to utilize that information, in order to properly calculate the speed in meters per second (the measurement they would utilize), they would have to first convert meters to feet - - an arduous and unnecessary process.
