Why might homeowners feel impotent show bravado at an approaching wildfire?

Homeowners will feel very powerless and show some kind of boldness in a way to intimidate a wildfire which is approaching their house which they own. They don't want the fire to destroy it and will do whatever they can to stop it in its path.
